Grow Your Plant Knowledge: Take a Class

Herbs Galore classes are limited in size and filled on a first come, first served basis. Discounts of $1 per person per program are offered to members of Maymont and the Old Domininion Herb Society. Advance registration and payment is required by Wednesday, April 25. Fees are non-refundable except in the case of event or program cancellation. Herbs Galore & More is held rain or shine.

COOKING PANCAKES WITH FRESH HERBS – $10

Mark Kimmel & Culinary Arts Students, Chesterfield Technical Center . Start your day off right with fresh vegetable pancakes flavored with herbs from the garden. Enjoy delicious samples and take home the recipe that can be customized for your own taste buds.

11am -12pm / Stone
DOWN & DIRTY WITH HERBS-$8
Maymont's Horticulture Staff.
Perfect for beginners, this class covers the basics of herb gardening including growing, cultivating, and enjoying the results. We'll help you decide which herbs are right for you and provide an opportunity to touch and sniff.

FROM THE GARDEN TO THE PLATE – $10

David Barrish & Culinary Arts Students, J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Discover how fresh, seasonal ingredients can be used to deliver maximum sensory appeal and nourishment. Flavor, balance and plate presentation will be discussed using several recipes as examples. Samples provided.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMON HERBS… – $10
Madeline Wajda, Willow Pond Farm.
Pucker up! Learn to make lemonade, lemon chicken and sweet lemony treats using the Herb of the Year, lemon balm, as well as lemon thyme, lemon verbena, lemongrass, and lemon basil. Samples provided.

DESIGNING YOUR HERB GARDEN – $8
Mark Ragland, Herb & Garden Enthusiast.
Your herb garden can cover acres or be as simple as a container garden; but the design is the most important part. Inspired by herb gardens from around the world, learn how to design the garden that's perfect for you.

MAKE IT AND TAKE IT: HERBAL TEA GARDEN - $20
Nicole Schermerhorn, A Thyme to Plant at Lavender Fields Herb Farm.
Plant the perfect herbs to make all kinds of refreshing herbal teas, then enjoy some delicious tea samples. Four plants, soil, container, growing instructions and recipes provided. Be prepared to get dirty, and bring gloves.

The following demonstrations are free with $2 Marketplace admission and will be held inside the Marketplace on the Carriage House Lawn. Advance registration not required.

ACU-YOGA & SELF-TREATMENT TECHNIQUES
Albert Cooper, CMT, Acu-Yoga Teacher.
Begin with a Qi Gong (energy practice), then practice standing poses and learn about breathing techniques and acupressure points. Bring a yoga mat. (Store your mat at the Plant Check for a 50 cents.)

SEAL TEAM “PUP” PHYSICAL TRAINING
John McGuire, former Navy SEAL. Introduce your kids (Level I, Ages 5-8) to healthy physical training and team building during this fun fitness program that builds confidence, fitness level and discipline.

COMPOSTING IS RECYCLING…NATURALLY
T. Michael Likins , Virginia Cooperative Extension, and Starbucks.
Learn why composting is easy, healthy and good for the environment, and take home tips to start your own backyard compost pile.

ROSES 101
Don Penzler, Consulting Rosarian & Master Gardener. Find out how to select the best type of roses for your garden from a dozen varieties that grow in the Richmond area.

1:30-2:15pm
PRUNING BASICS
Jim Orband, Virginia Cooperative Extension.
Get the basics for pruning woody ornamental trees and shrubs including correct timing, thinning and other fundamentals.

2:30-3:15pm
DISCOVERING DAYLILIES

Steve Kruse, Dewpoint Gardens
Unearth some great tips on daylilies including how to plant, care for and divide these perfect perennials.

9 – 5pm
Music provided by AAA Disc Jockeys between demonstrations.
