Maymont Honors Black History Month UPSTAIRS/DOWNSTAIRS AT MAYMONT Saturdays, February 4-25, 12:30-1:30pm, Maymont Mansion Explore Maymont Mansion from the perspective of the employees who toiled behind the scenes to maintain a millionaire’s home in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Richmond. AT MAYMONT Throughout March, April and May Maymont springs into spring with an action-packed, wonder-filled season brimming with programs and events for all interests and age groups showcasing every facet of this American estate. Get up close and personal with the goats, enjoy an in-depth look at the gardens, or chat with a Victorian lady! Maymont Mansion celebrates the Japanese Garden's 100th anniversary with engaging lectures, special tours, a display featuring Asian items from the mansion's collection as well as period fashions on loan from the Valentine Richmond History Center. With a knowledgeable Maymont horticulturist as your guide, your senses will come alive as you learn about the Japanese Garden and experience Maymont lit by the moon and full of nighttime sounds. JAPANESE GARDENS IN NORTH AMERICA: LEARNING FROM MAYMONT A lecture and reception sponsored by the Maymont Council Tuesday, March 13, 6pm, Garden Hall Dr. Kendall Brown, Professor of Asian Art History at California State University at Long Beach, speaks on the creation of Japanese gardens in America, an important manifestation of the great interest in Japanese culture permeating the West in the late Victorian era. Maymont is among twenty-five gardens featured in Dr. Brown’s forthcoming book, Notable Japanese Gardens in America. A preeminent scholar in his field, Dr. Brown has researched, written about, and lectured on this fascinating topic throughout his career and recently served as Curator of Collections, Exhibitions and Programs at Pacific Asia Museum. $10 per person/$5 members. Maymont Honors Women’s History Month VOICES OF VICTORIAN WOMEN Sunday, March 25, 12-5pm, Maymont Mansion A woman’s life at the turn of the 20th century was about much more than attending tea parties and doing needlepoint. All women were concerned with moral, social, economic and political changes that affected their everyday lives. This special tour of the Dooleys’ home focuses on a woman’s role and influence 100 years ago and introduces visitors to one of Mrs. Dooley’s dressmakers, who doesn’t hesitate to share her opinions on working women, “delicate” subjects and the changes she sees for women in the new century. THE MIKADO: JAPONISME MEETS BRITISH HUMOR AT MAYMONT A lecture and reception sponsored by the Maymont Council in collaboration with the Virginia Opera Tuesday, March 27, 6pm, Garden Hall Join Glenn Winters, Virginia Opera’s Outreach Musical Director, for a fun look at Gilbert and Sullivan’s enduring operatic favorite, The Mikado, first performed in London in 1885. Dr. Winters will share insights into the theatrical masterpiece, the Western fascination with all things Japanese in the late nineteenth century, and the emergence of a brand of distinctly British humor leading in a straight line to such modern purveyors as Monty Python. $10 per person/$5 members.
