Japanese Garden 100th Anniversary

Join us in 2012 for a series of special programs and events celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Japanese Garden, one of Virginia’s most beloved places.
 
JANUARY-MARCH

JAPANESE GARDEN PHOTO CONTEST
Entries accepted January 4-March 30
From the dramatic 45-foot waterfall to the azumaya overlooking the pond, there are countless photographic opportunities in the Japanese Garden. In celebration of the garden's 100th anniversary, Maymont's guests will be invited to submit their best images of the garden in a special photography contest. Images will be displayed for the public at a local gallery during summer 2012. Enter the contest and view entries here.

MAYMONT FLOWER & GARDEN SHOW PLANT SALE
February 9-12, Greater Richmond Convention Center
Maymont Foundation’s Plant Sale at the Flower & Garden Show will feature plants that originate from Japan. Plant sale proceeds benefit Maymont Foundation.

JAPANESE GARDENS IN NORTH AMERICA: LEARNING FROM MAYMONT
FEATURING DR. KENDALL BROWN

Dr. Kendall Brown, Professor of Asian Art History at California State University at Long Beach, will speak on the creation of Japanese gardens in America, one important manifestation of the great surge of interest in Japanese culture that permeated Western design and taste in the late Victorian era. Maymont is among the twenty-five featured in Dr. Brown’s forthcoming book, Notable Japanese Gardens in America. A preeminent scholar in his field, Dr. Brown has been researching, writing about, and lecturing on this fascinating topic throughout his career. $10 per person/$5 members. Reservations required. THE MIKADO: JAPONISME MEETS BRITISH HUMOR

A Maymont Council Sponsored Presentation & Reception in collaboration with the Virginia Opera

Join Glenn Winters, Virginia Opera’s Outreach Musical Director, for a fun look at Gilbert & Sullivan’s enduring operatic favorite The Mikado, first staged in London in 1885. Dr. Winters will share insights into the theatrical masterpiece, the Western fascination with all things Japanese in the late nineteenth century and the emergence of a brand of distinctly British humor, leading in a straight line to such modern purveyors as Monty Python. $10 per person/$5 members. TASTING THE TEAS OF JAPAN

MOTHER'S DAY TEA
Featuring a Japanese Tea Ceremony Display
Saturday, May 12, 2-4pm, Maymont Mansion Lawn

Enjoy a traditional tea on the Maymont Mansion lawn while learning about the Japanese tea ceremony. The taking of tea was a custom shared by both Victorians and the Japanese. Although the beverage was similar, the rituals of serving and consumption were indeed worlds apart. As you enjoy your tea and delicious sweets and savories, you will be enthralled by an authentic demonstration and explanation of Japanese tea customs by special guest from Tokyo, Toko Yomura. Your afternoon also includes a tour of the Maymont Mansion where the influence of Japanese design on Victorian taste will be presented. $25 per person/$20 members. Explore the influence of Japan on decorative arts and home furnishings as represented in the Maymont Mansion. This in-depth tour with senior museum staff will provide guests the opportunity to examine Satsuma, Imari, and Kutani ceramics and other Japanese objects acquired by the Dooleys. The tour will provide insight into the development of Japonisme in the West and its far reaching impact on collecting and design. In addition, objets d’art from other Asian cultures in the Maymont collection will be examined. $7 per person; reservations accepted. BONSAI EXHIBIT IN THE JAPANESE GARDEN
Saturday, October 13, 10am-4pm, Japanese Garden

Rain date: Sunday, October 14
Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Japanese Garden as you view the masterpieces of the Richmond Bonsai Society on display in the garden. Bonsai is the Japanese art of training a small tree in a low pot to create a living horticultural masterpiece. Members of the society will be present to share how their masterpieces were created. LEAF PEEKING TOUR

Tour the Japanese Garden as fall color provides a different impression of one of the most beautiful places in Virginia. Director of Horticulture, Peggy Singlemann, provides fascinating insights into the garden’s development over the past century and the various aspects of Japanese garden design. ONE GREAT MORNING OF RAKING
Saturday, November 17, 9am–12pm, Japanese Garden

Maymont’s Japanese Garden is a favorite place for many Richmonders, but caring for the garden is quite a task. To help with this endeavor, volunteer to help the horticulture staff rake the fallen leaves covering the garden. Please call ahead to let us know you are joining us, and bring your own rake!
